14 May — Day of the State Flag, State Emblem and National Anthem of the Republic of Belarus

13.05.2023

The Day of the State Flag, the State Emblem and the National Anthem of the Republic of Belarus will be celebrated in our country on the second Sunday of May.

In accordance with Presidential Decree No 157 of 26 March 1998 "On National Holidays, Public Holidays and Remembrance Days in the Republic of Belarus", this holiday is one of the public holidays.

The national flag, national emblem and national anthem are the symbols of our country as a sovereign state. Every modern state has its own symbols, which express its political independence and autonomy, its history of formation and development, and its national identity.

The standard coat of arms and the flag regulations were approved by the Decree of the President of the Republic of Belarus following the results of the republican referendum of 14 May 1995, one of the questions of which was the establishment of the state symbols.

The wreath depicted on the coat of arms is made of golden rye ears, intertwined with clover and flax flowers, wrapped in a red-green ribbon. It embodies the best qualities of the Belarusian people – diligence, aspiration for freedom and patriotism.

The red colour on our flag – is the colour of the banners of the Red Army and the Belarusian partisans who liberated their native land from the Nazi invaders. Green is the colour of the forests and fields, a symbol of spring, hope and rebirth. The white colour of the ornament reflects the spiritual purity of the Belarusians.

State symbols – the history and future of the Belarusian state, the embodiment of the idea of national unity, the most important attributes of the sovereignty and independence of the Fatherland.
