National Exposition of the Republic of Belarus at 54th "DAMASCUS INTERNATIONAL FAIR" (August 15-22, 2007, Damascus, Syrian Arabic Republic)

According to the Plan of national exhibitions (expositions) of the Republic of Belarus abroad for 2007 approved by Regulation of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Belarus N 131 of February 2, 2007 a National Exposition of the Republic of Belarus at 54th “DAMASCUS INTERNATIONAL FAIR” was held on August 15-22, 2007 in Damascus, Syria.
The State Committee for Science and Technologies of the Republic of Belarus together with Belarusian Institute of System Analysis and Information Support of S&T Sphere played the role of the collective organizer of a section of S&T developments where the universities of the Ministry of Education, and also institutes of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus have been presented. The collective S&T section was visited by Deputy Minister of Trade of the Republic of Belarus I.Stepanenko, the Ambassador of the Republic of Belarus in Syria V.Lopato-Zagorski, adviser to the Embassy of the Republic of Belarus in Syria V.Mirutko, Head of the department of the Ministry of Industry of the Syrian Arabic Republic Siyad Kutayni.
During the exhibition the following activities have been carried out by the members of Belarusian delegation:
- Working on the collective exposition of the Republic of Belarus;
- Meetings and negotiations with potential clients and partners in the field of business and innovations;
- Meetings with representatives of local scientific community, presentation of own developments;
- Establishment of contacts with universities of Syria;
- Monitoring pavilions of the exhibition on the certain scientific directions.
On the stand of Ministry of Education of the Republic of Belarus developments of the following organizations were submitted: Belarusian State University, Belarusian National Technical University, Belarusian State Technological University, Brest State Technical University, Grodno State University named after Y.Kupala, Gomel State University named after F.Skoryna, Gomel State Technical University named after P.O.Sukhoy, Belarusian State University of Transport (Gomel), Belarusian-Russian University (Mogilev), Mogilev State University of Foodstuffs, Polotsk State University, Vitebsk State Technological University, and also Scientific Technological Park pf BNTU “Metolit”.
The large interest of the visitors is expressed to opportunities of getting high and post-graduate education in Belarus. Educational services of institutions of higher education have been presented. The most popular specialities are as follows: mechanical engineering, programming, architecture, land science, philology, medicine (surgery, stomatology).
The National Academy of Sciences of Belarus was represented by the Institute of Metal’s Technology and the United Institute of Solid State and Semiconductors Physics. As a result of the activities at the exhibition they signed a number of protocols on intentions and contracts with the Syrian companies in the following areas: molding technologies for color metals and alloys, rolling of metals, introductions of new monocrystal materials in laser engineering and optoelectronics, etc. Besides, an exchange of commercial information about developments of the above mentioned institutes of the NAS and opportunities for their sale in the markets of Syria, Lebanon, Iraq and Jordan were agreed.
In the frame of the exhibition the following events have been organized with the assistance of the Embassy of Belarus in Syria:
- Meeting with the representatives of Syrian scientific organizations in Federation of Trade Chambers of the Syrian Arabic Republic;
- Seminar and presentation of opportunities of Belarusian science and definite directions of possible S&T cooperation between the two countries in Damascus University. It was held under the aegis of the Ministry of Higher Education of Syria.
Belarusian presentations in the frame of the above mentioned meetings were followed up by an exchange of opinions and fruitful discussion on cooperation in scientific and technical sphere between Belarus and Syria.
